The Flavors of Japan: A Unique Twist to a Classic

Unlike the rest of the world, Japan has gained a reputation for outlandish flavors of their products. We see this ranging from their drinks to candy and even a twist on mainstream items. To enlighten you here’s a taste of some of their uniqueness. Normally, one wouldn’t pick shrimp as a topping, but what if one added avocado in addition to shrimp? However, those aren’t the only things this wacky pizza has. To make things more interesting, they, meaning Domino’s Japan, willingly add mayonnaise to their pizza. For Americans and Europeans, a seafood pizza wouldn’t be considered normal at all.

On this beauty are soy sauce marinated scallops, clams, and shrimp; however, keeping to their peculiar traditions, the pizza doesn’t use tomato sauce but cheese and mayonnaise. Another seafood sample that Japan brings forth is the crab seafood special. This interesting combination was brought forward by Domino’s Japan’ and consists of crab, shrimp, and to everyone’s surprise, broccoli. Japan contributes a lot to the world and it even adds its own unique twist to everything making Japan a special place.

Different Types of Pizza in the U.S (Part Two)

There are more than just a few types of pizza, especially in the U.S.. There are even others that are less common but still available.

  • Chicago Thin Crust is crispy and crunchy and usually cut into squares. Sometimes it uses a spicy sauce and large amounts of meat.
  • Similar to that is the New York Thin Crust, which also has a crunchy and thin crust. It has thin tomato sauce and lots of grated mozzarella.
  • New England Greek has a crust that is crunchy and thick. They are topped with typical Greek ingredients like feta, artichokes, and kalamata olives.
  • In the Tomato Pie, the cheese and toppings are placed under the tomato sauce.
  • Lastly, the St. Louis Style pizza has a crust made without yeast and uses Provel cheese instead of mozzarella.

Different Types of Pizza in the U.S: Part I

Pizza is basically just dough, sauce, and toppings, making it hard to believe so many variations of it exist. Therefore to narrow down the list, here are the top four most popular pizzas.

The original pizza, the Neapolitan, is a Spartan style of pizza which features a thin crust and few toppings. With the crust being thin, too much sauce or cheese cannot be used because it will result in the crust becoming soggy.

What makes the California Style pizza different is its foundation in using uncommon toppings. While the crust is similar to the Neapolitan, toppings can include but not limited to: barbeque chicken, smoked salmon, red peppers, and pate.

The Chicago deep dish pizza is different in both crust and the format of the pizza; the crust is baked in a deep pan and so is similar in appearance to a pie. Things become different when it is known that the toppings are placed under the tomato sauce, as this is to prevent them from burning due the length of time it takes to thoroughly cook it.

The Detroit style also has its own unique take on style. Like the Chicago style, it also has a deep dish crust but instead of being sliced diagonally it is cut into squares and served with marinara sauce.

MMM MMM Cheesy: Different Cheese Options for Pizzas

Cheese is a main ingredient in pizza, and there are many different types of cheeses that can be found on pizzas. The most popular one of them all is mozzarella cheese. Two main varieties of mozzarella are deli mozzarella and fresh mozzarella.

Provolone is a semi-hard Italian cheese and in the U.S. is often referred to as Aged Provolone. Also in the U.S. is Deli Provolone that is sold at most deli counters.

Aged Italian hard cheese can be grated or shaved onto any pizza to add the finishing touch. However, you should never put them in the oven.

Smoked Gouda is a smoke cured yellow cheese made from a cow’s milk in Gouda, Netherlands. This cheese is best used diced and it does not melt as well but has a creamy texture.

Lastly, Bleu Cheese works well with fresh bright flavored vegetables and can be used crumbled up on the bottom layer.

A Pizza for Vegetarians

Lots of people choose to top their pizzas with tons of meat; there are even “meat-lovers” pizzas. However, for those who are vegetarian, it is possible to top pizzas without any meat.

The basic topping for most pizzas are tomato sauce and shredded or sliced cheese. Both of these can be used on a vegetarian pizza. Commonly, other vegetarian toppings include different vegetables such as sliced onions, sliced or chopped peppers, black or green olives, mushrooms, and fruits like pineapples.

There are also fake meats that can be used. They emulate flavour and texture of meat, but do not contain any actual meat. An example of this is vegetarian sausages and are usually made from soy products and just made to taste like real sausages. The reason for this is to give a wider flavor palette then a regular vegetarian pizza.

A Brief History of Pizza

Although there are disputes as to the origins of pizza, with many claiming that the Greeks or the Egyptians inventing the meal, it is generally agreed upon that pizza originated from Italy. To be more specific, it came from the waterfront city of Naples, Italy; there pizza started off with humble beginnings.

Pizza was quite popular during the 1700 and 1800s in Naples especially among the working class. Being that they had to work constantly, the working class needed food that could not only be quickly eaten but also was simple enough to be consumed while on the go, hence pizza was the preferred choice.

The original composition of pizza consisted of flatbread with cheese, tomatoes, anchovies, and oil and garlic. After the unification of Italy in 1861 into a monarchy, on a visit to Naples in 1889 the queen’s favorite pizza was pizza mozzarella, which consisted of flatbread with white cheese, tomatoes, and basil.  This served to boost the popularity of pizza but it was still generally unknown throughout the world.

Pizza’s fame however, was truly obtained during the first half of the 20th century when immigrants from Italy brought the dish to America. Here, the non-Italians were interested in the new dishes and eventually came to love it; hence a rise in Pizzerias throughout America. This made pizza world-renowned and enjoyed by all; hence making the delicious slice of flatbread with cheese legendary.

The Diversity of Pizza

Pizza is a favorite food of many people from many different countries. This begs to question, why? Possibly, one of the most important reasons is the diversity of it. If you want to have a different pizza every night, you can.

There is a variety of different toppings that you can order for your pizza. There are meat toppings such as ground sausage, salami, and most popular, pepperoni. You can also order special toppings too, like different types of cheeses, pineapples, jalapenos, etc. If you are a vegetarian, there are also toppings for you. If you are trying to have a gluten-free diet, there are also gluten-free pizzas. Experiment, and find the pizza that’s just right for you.

A Party in Your Mouth

When you think of a party, no doubt you think of having lots of fun. You think of people hanging out, talking, dancing, and eating. Food is almost always present at parties. Why is that? It’s simple, food is fun. Especially food like pizza!

Pizza is something that can be shared among a group of people, and therefore can be used for any informal gathering. Smaller pizzas can also be shared between families on a relaxing day at home. Also, with various toppings available, everyone can be happy. Whether you like pepperoni, cheese, pineapples, or even anchovies, eating with lots of friends or a couple people, a slice of pizza is an easy way to have a party in your mouth.

Our commitment to vegans

We’re about to celebrate 40 years of being in business. In the same place with the same decor, and many of our original recipes including our famous garlic n’ cheese rolls. We do, however, change out our sawdust covered floors several times a week to keep it fresh.

We love our customers and value their ongoing patronage. We listen to feedback and pay attention to what’s going on with people’s’ eating habits. One thing we noticed was that we were under serving the large vegan community. We put on our thinking caps, did a year of research, tested various vegan dishes to no end and eventually launched our large vegan menu a few years ago.

We weren’t sure what kind of response we would get but we felt it was the right thing to do. There are many people who have friends who have various eating habits. Wouldn’t it be great if they could all eat in the same place and get a dish that fits their eating style? We thought so and apparently so did a lot of other people.

I recently found a story of someone who decided to try a vegan eating lifestyle for 101 days and here’s what she had to say on day 17:

“In the evening my roommate and I decided to check out the original Pizza Cookery in Woodland Hills, which just released their new vegan menu. I wasn’t too keen about going there at first, for while the vegan pizza I had in the past was good it was nothing compared to normal pizza. Truth be told I was also afraid I would be tempted by the delicious aroma of the other customers pizza around me. All the meals came with complimentary garlic rolls which conveniently had a vegan and non-vegan option.”

“For my main dish I ordered the mini pizza with a wheat crust, follow your heart cheese, tomato sauce, mushrooms, olives, and vegan pepperoni. I was pleasantly surprised after tasting my order. Not only did it look like pizza, but it tasted almost exactly the same as a normal mushroom, olive, and pepperoni pizza. I was in heaven. This place is definitely the best place to go if you are looking to find vegan pizza, and is perfect when going out with non-vegan friends who don’t necessarily want to have to switch to your eating habits.”

“Also besides the food the ambiance was great, and is a perfect place to take a date. The inside of the restaurant has an almost rustic feel to it with wooden tables and booths. They also have multi colored Christmas lights strung up along the ceiling, giving it that extra touch. I must say that this has been by far the best vegan friendly restaurant I have gone to yet.”

It makes me happy that our customers are happy and that we’ve succeeded by providing a well researched, well-tested vegan menu. It’s also great to see herbivores and carnivores eating the food they love in one place so one doesn’t have to adapt to the other if they don’t want to.

After the success of our vegan menu, we also launched our gluten-free and low-sodium menus that have also been a huge success.

Thank you to our customers for your continued feedback and support. Keep it coming. We’re listening. We’re always listening.
